CHAPTER 26

Katie sat on the couch, twisting the tissue in her hands. She was wearing a black leotard again, this time with gray sweatpants and a pair of Nike shoes. Her hair was pulled up in another messy bun. Her eyes were bloodshot and her nose was bright red. Rachel wasn’t sure if Katie had been crying or had a cold or both.

“I should’ve told you the truth earlier. I made a promise to Sherri not to say anything, but after you left yesterday, I went onto your website.” Katie shifted uncomfortably on the couch. “I read your story about Mallory and it just broke my heart. I don’t have children of my own, but I can’t imagine losing one. Having a child just ripped from you.” She started to cry.

“Tell us what happened,” Rachel prodded her.

“I just can’t afford to cover for my sister anymore.” Katie blew her nose into a tissue. “And those FBI agents came to my office and I didn’t . . .”

Rachel sat down next to Katie and patted her knee. “Just take it easy. One thing at a time. Do you know where your sister is?”

“She’s gone again.” Katie placed her shaky hands underneath each leg. “I told her about the FBI coming to visit me, and Jason freaked out. They packed up and left. I honestly don’t know where they went this time. Sherri said she would call me when it was safe.”

Rachel’s breath caught in her chest. Mallory had been close by all this time and she hadn’t known it. How many more times could she go through this? Rachel silently cursed herself for not trusting her instincts when she’d first met Katie. She should have waited around the dance studio after they’d had coffee and followed her home. If she’d done that, Mallory could be safe in her arms right now.

“Can you start from the beginning and tell us what happened?” Rachel asked as gently as she could.

“When I told you that my sister and I haven’t spoken in years, it was the truth. Sherri called me out of the blue last week and told me that she needed my help. She said that she had found out that Maddy might have been adopted illegally.”

“Did she say how she found that out?”

“Sherri said she ran across some documents in Jason’s office when she was searching for a credit card bill. She ran across the adoption file and pulled out the papers. Something on one of the letters from the attorney didn’t add up. Sherri didn’t say what, specifically. Only that she started doing some digging. One thing led to another. I guess the agency they used was located in South Florida. She started looking online at adoption agencies in Florida and that led to other sites. Sherri Googled illegal adoptions and missing children and somehow she ran across your website and saw Maddy’s picture on there—well, a picture of your Mallory, who is so obviously her Maddy. When she realized that you were the owner of the site, she Googled your name and found out all kinds of stuff.
